Dear families,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students, staff and parents of Jean Steckle Public School for providing me with the opportunity to work with an amazing community. Each day it is a pleasure to come to school and serve this great school. The children’s smiling faces continue to be my inspiration.

I will continue to work diligently in assuring that Jean Steckle Public School remains a safe and positive environment for your child. I truly appreciate the support that parents have shown, and I look forward to the many exciting events in the new year.

I wish each of you a wonderful holiday. May it be one of love, peace, and happiness.

Please have a safe and wonderful holiday with your family. The school will reopen on Monday, January 7, 2019.

Sincerely,

Andrea Michelutti – Principal

Important Information Regarding the Before and After School Program

Effective Monday, January 7, the doors to enter the “YW Before and After school program” at Jean Steckle PS will be moved from the front doors of the school to the second set of doors off the side parking lot (by outdoor recycle bins).  Signs will be posted on the doors indicating where to enter.

Yearbook Community Support

We are thankful for the generosity received by our Yearbook Committee from our neighborhood businesses. This is a reminder that our yearbook committee has been working hard on our 2018 – 2019 yearbook.

Our yearbook marketing team is continuing to reach out to our school community for support. If you have a business or know someone with a business who might be interested in supporting our yearbook, through advertising, please contact us by January 11th.

To recognize your support we will include a business card sized advertisement in our book, which will be shared with our Steckle families. We sold over 300 books last year!

If you have questions or would like to support our yearbook, please contact us at shannon_becker@wrdsb.ca or by phone at 519-748-1919. We look forward to hearing from you!

Sincerely, The Yearbook Committee

Kindergarten and Primary Class Popcorn Orders

A reminder that we are going to continue offering Butter & Salt popcorn from the company From Farm to Table to our Kindergarten and Primary students on Wednesdays to fundraise for our Student Council.

Please note – there is no popcorn planned for the first week back to school in January.

If you would like to purchase popcorn, there are 2 options for popcorn payment, however, your classroom teacher may request that all payments be made on School-Day – it is up to the routine in their classroom.

1. School Day- You may purchase popcorn for ALL 10 popcorn dates for $10.00 by January 6th and your child will receive their popcorn each popcorn day in January, February and March.

OR

2. Send $1.00 with your child ON the popcorn date if they wish to purchase popcorn.
*Please ensure money is labelled with student name and purpose for the money*

Popcorn will be delivered to the Kindergarten & Primary classes by the second break each Wednesday.

If you have students in grades 4 – 8 they will still continue to have the chance to purchase popcorn at 2nd breaks in room 17.

If you have any questions – please direct them to shannon_becker@wrdsb.ca

French Immersion Information for SK students

Thank you to all the parents/guardians who attended the French Immersion information meetings. If you have not had an opportunity to attend a meeting about French Immersion there is one on Tuesday, January 8, 2019, at 7 p.m. at the Education Centre, 51 Ardelt Ave., Kitchener.

This letter acts as a reminder that registration for the Grade 1 French Immersion Program for the 2019-2020 school year begins on Monday, January 7, 2019.

Registration placement into the French Immersion Program will run from January 7, until January 31, 2019. Registration received by January 31 will be used to create the Grade 1 classes for the French Immersion Program for 2019-2020. Interested families may register for the program at the Waterloo Region District School Board website at www.wrdsb.ca/french. Students that register after January 31, 2019, will be placed in classes where space is available or be placed on a waiting list.

For the 2019-2020 school year students will be placed in classes through the following process:

  • Registrants who have a sibling registered in the French Immersion Program will be given preference until Thursday, January 31, 2019.
  • Registrants who live within the geographical boundary of the school, and have been registered prior to January 31, 2019, will be placed next. Provided the number of residential boundary registrants exceeds the number of spaces available in the program (20 per class), and all students with older siblings currently enrolled in the French Immersion Program are placed, a lottery system will be used to determine acceptance into the program.
  • If space is available, students from out of boundary will be placed in the program via lottery.
  • Any registrations received after January 31, 2019, will be placed in available classes or on a waiting list in the order they registered, regardless of residency.
  • Efforts will be made to accommodate as many waiting list students as possible.

A confirmation email will be sent in March 2019 to inform all families of children who registered for the program about the status of their enrollment. If you have any additional questions or require more information about the French Immersion Program or the registration process, please call 519-570-0003, extension 4277.
