Dear Families of Jean Steckle Public School,

Thank you to our families for supporting our parking lot concerns. We have noticed a change in the fire-route area of the yard. Please remember that the same expectations apply to the front of the school.

The school’s facility department works closely with contractors to ensure our schoolyard is plowed. Unfortunately this week, we had a few issues with our sidewalks. I have forwarded our communities’ concerns to the facility department. If you have questions or concerns, please email andrea_michelutti@wrdsb.ca.

Sincerely,

Andrea Michelutti, Principal

November 15 is a PD Day

Teachers will be participating in a Professional Development day on Friday, November 15. In the morning, teachers will be working on building strong relationships within the classroom communities. In the afternoon, teachers will be available to meet with parents if they would like an interview to discuss their child’s progress.

Animal Day – November 22

The November spirit day is Animal Day.  Our primary goal is to raise some awareness around animal rights, animal welfare, and the ways that we can protect them.  This week the Grade 6 leadership team will be creating announcements sharing cool facts about animals.

On Friday, November 22nd students may wish to wear animal themed clothing (e.g., animal print, wear a piece of clothing with an animal on it, dress as an animal, wear Steckle Spirit Wear, or clothing with the bee on it, or any other brilliant ideas the students may have).

Walking to School Tips

Walking to school is a fun, easy way to add exercise to the day, but it’s important to stay safe on your way there.

Safety tips to follow on a walk to school include:

  • Parents should plan a safe route
  • Don’t take shortcuts
  • Young children should walk with an adult
  • Older students should walk with a friend
  • Don’t push, shove, or chase each other when near the street
  • Don’t take rides from people if it wasn’t arranged by a parent
  • Wear bright-coloured clothes
  • Watch for cars at every driveway and intersection

Crossing the Street

With cars turning the corner to drivers not paying close attention, it can be hard for children to cross the street. The best rules to follow:

  • Stop at the curb or edge of the street.
  • Look left, right, left, behind you, and in front of you for traffic, and don’t cross until the coast is clear.
  • Keep looking for traffic until you are done crossing the road.

Promote Safety

As more people walk, communities, schools, and drivers become more aware of safe practices and often notice where safety needs to be improved—and making those changes benefits everyone. Plus, more people out in the neighbourhood builds a sense of community.

Lost and Found Display

Parents are invited to visit our lost and found table located outside of the office. All unclaimed items will be donated on November 18.
