School Council Information Sheet

Q: What is School Council?

A: School Council is made up of a group of parent volunteers, principals and teachers who meet once a month.  We are the “venue for the various stakeholders in education to work in partnership.  Our role, in collaboration with the principal, staff and the community, is to help set the priorities of the school, and to enhance learning opportunities, through various activities, for the benefit of our children.”

Q: What does JSPS School Council actually do?

A: We have fun and raise money. In past years, School Council has coordinated the Move-a-thon, Movie Night, and Family Fun Night events.  School Council has also been responsible for organizing Pizza Mondays and Hot Dog Days.

Q: Why does JSPS School Council fundraise?

A: We raise money to buy items that help students learn. Last year we bought music kits, home reading books, data projectors, Chromebooks, kindergarten outdoor play kits, a buddy bench, pulley kits, and more.

Q: Can I get involved?

A: Absolutely!  The best place to get started is by attending the September School Council meeting.  All parents are encouraged to attend.

When: Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 6:00 pm

Where: JSPS library (second floor)

Q: How do I join School Council?

A: The council executive is elected each year at the September meeting as per the guidelines laid out by the WRDSB. Available positions: Chair, Vice-Chair, Treasurer, Secretary, Fundraising and Volunteer Co-ordinator.  Position descriptions are available at jst.wrdsb.ca under the School Council tab. Any parent can put their name forward to be considered for the five council executive positions.  All parents are welcome to attend meetings, vote on activities and spending, and volunteer for events and projects even if they are not on the executive.

Q: What happens at the School Council meetings?

A: You get in-person updates from the principal, vice-principal, teachers, and the School Council executive so that you stay connected with everything that is going on at your child’s school.
