Dear Jean Steckle families,

It is so hard to believe the Holiday Season is so quickly upon us.

As a school, we are mindful that families in our community have endured many changes throughout this pandemic. We are also mindful that our community is in a “Red Zone” right now and we want you to stay as safe as possible.

For these reasons and through discussions at School Council, we have chosen as a school not to participate in collecting donations or fundraising for community agencies at this time. We encourage you to continue the tradition of giving that you have established with your family.

We are still looking for outstanding forms: media release, responsible use procedure, and the concussion protocol. If you haven’t signed these forms, yet please sign the forms through School-Day this weekend.

Stay safe,

Andrea Michelutti, Principal

Being safe in our neighbourhood

We live and learn in a great community with many paths, trees, parks, and ponds. At this time, the pond is not frozen and playing on it is not safe. Please have a conversation with your children about winter safety. We will be sending reminders to our students through the announcements as well.

Look, Listen, Live: ION LRT Safety

Safety around Grand River Transit (GRT) vehicles is a shared responsibility. Waterloo Region residents of all ages should be aware of the dangers around ION trains, tracks, crossings, and overhead lines. In this helpful publication from GRT, attached here, we’re reminded to “Look, Listen, Live,” around the ION light rail system.

Fast Facts about ION Safety

  • ION trains are quiet – remove your headphones or earbuds and look up before crossing the tracks and when waiting on the platform.
  • See tracks, think train – always cross at designated crosswalks and never walk or cycle on tracks. Lives can change in a split second.
  • Mind the line – stay behind the yellow platform edge while waiting for the train.
  • It’s not your ride if you have to run – never run across traffic to catch the train.
  • Don’t cross tracks when lights are flashing or crossing arms are down.

Whether you walk, cycle or drive, follow the signage, be mindful of your surroundings, stay off the tracks, and treat trains with the same caution as any vehicle.

News from the Huron Community Association – Food Drive

The Huron Community Association food drive is taking place on December 13 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 pm in front of Parkvale Park. The food drive will help the Kitchener Waterloo Food Bank (www.thefoodbank.ca). The most needed items do tend to change but are available at https://www.thefoodbank.ca/get-involved/most-needed/

Food drop-offs can take place anytime during those hours. There will be tables and bins for the donations, and the Huron Community Association will staff it.

The Huron Community Association is planning to have that be the “light up the Huron Hood” light walk evening as well. Everyone is encouraged to have encouraged everyone to decorate their homes with lights.

COVID-19 Information

Safety is a shared responsibility between the school, the home and the community, and families play a critical role in limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Please review the Resource for Parents – Know when to self-monitor, self-isolate or send your child to school resource. This document will help you navigate situations you and your family may face during this time.

It is even more essential to use COVID-19 Screening before school each day to ensure our students and staff remain safe.
