Dear Jean Steckle families,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the students, staff and parents of Jean Steckle Public School for providing me with the opportunity to work with an amazing community. Each day it is a pleasure to come to school and serve this great school. The children continue to be my inspiration. The children have been resilient and positive and I am very proud of them!

I will continue to work diligently in assuring that Jean Steckle Public School remains a safe and positive environment for your child. I truly appreciate the support that parents have shown, and I look forward to what the new year will bring.

I wish each of you a wonderful holiday. May it be one of love, peace, and happiness.

Please have a safe and wonderful holiday with your family.

Andrea Michelutti, Principal

Changing Modes of Learning

Families of elementary students who wish to change their child’s mode of learning (in-person to distance learning or from distance learning to in-person), will have the opportunity to do so from Monday, January 4 to Friday, January 15, 2021.

To request a change in your child’s mode of learning, please email andrea_michelutti@wrdsb.ca for a transition request form. These forms will be sent out in January.

Please note that this change will be for the remainder of the school year.

When will elementary students transition between learning modes?

  • Students transitioning into in-person learning will start on Thursday, February 18, 2021
  • Students transitioning into distance learning will start on Monday, February 22, 2021

In the meantime, we encourage our families to have their child continue to attend their in-person or distance learning program.

It’s almost time to apply for Grade 1 French Immersion!

French language programs at the WRDSB begin in Grade 1. To find out more about the French program pathways and learning opportunities for students, visit our website: www.wrdsb.ca/french/french-programs/ and watch our presentation.

Core French – no application required

Core French is taught to all students in our elementary and secondary schools as part of the regular Ontario curriculum. Students learn the French language by speaking, reading and writing. Students are automatically enrolled in Core French starting in Grade 1 unless they are registered for French Immersion. Students in Core French will receive between 120 and 150 minutes of French instruction per week.

French Immersion – application required

Students enrolled in French Immersion spend 50 per cent of their day learning in French. In Grades 1 through 6, subjects taught in French are French language, Math, Social Studies and Visual Arts, Music or Physical Education. In Grades 7 and 8, the subjects taught in French are French language, Geography, History, Visual Arts and Health and Physical Education. If your child completes French Immersion from Grades 1 through 8, they will be able to continue their French pathway in selected high schools.

How do I apply for French Immersion?

You can apply online at www.wrdsb.ca/french. Applications for the program are accepted from January 6, 2021, to January 31, 2020 (Phase 1). You can also subscribe to this website to get up-to-date information about the application process.

COVID-19 Information

Safety is a shared responsibility between the school, the home and the community, and families play a critical role in limiting the spread of COVID-19.

Please review the Resource for Parents – Know when to self-monitor, self-isolate or send your child to school resource. This document will help you navigate situations you and your family may face during this time.

It is even more essential to use COVID-19 Screening before school each day to ensure our students and staff remain safe.
