January 11th, 2019
Dear families,
This week, our students saw an amazing Country Music Concert thanks to a generous grant from the Music Performance Trust Fund arranged through one of our families. The students listened to country music from the 1950s to today. The students were singing and dancing during the concert. It was one of the best concerts I’ve seen.
We are fortunate to have a Jazz band come to our school at the end of January perform for our students as part of this grant.
Sincerely,
Andrea Michelutti – Principal
Congratulations to Ms. Ellenton
After over 20 years of teaching in the Waterloo Region District School Board and in British Columbia, Ms. Elizabeth Ellenton is setting her sights on a well-deserved retirement and looks forward to spending more time with family and friends. Ms. Ellenton’s last day with us will be on January 31, 2019.
The entire school community benefitted from Ms. Ellenton’s leadership and passion for both learning and teaching. All of us at Jean Steckle Public School will miss Ms. Ellenton and will never forget her contributions to our school.
Once we have finished hiring for the position, we will share the name of the new teacher.
Important Information Regarding the Before and After School Program
Effective Monday, January 7, the doors to enter the “YW Before and After school program” at Jean Steckle PS will be moved from the front doors of the school to the second set of doors off the side parking lot (by outdoor recycle bins). Signs will be posted on the doors indicating where to enter.
Mary Poppins Update
We are thrilled to announce that production for the Mary Poppins musical at Jean Steckle Public School has begun! Rehearsals for the ensemble (only for students who auditioned for a role) begin next week. Look for a rehearsal schedule today.
French Immersion Information for SK students
This letter acts as a reminder that registration for the Grade 1 French Immersion Program for the 2019-2020 school year begins on Monday, January 7, 2019.
Registration placement into the French Immersion Program will run from January 7, until January 31, 2019. Registration received by January 31 will be used to create the Grade 1 classes for the French Immersion Program for 2019-2020. Interested families may register for the program at the Waterloo Region District School Board website at www.wrdsb.ca/french. Students that register after January 31, 2019, will be placed in classes where space is available or be placed on a waiting list.
For the 2019-2020 school year students will be placed in classes through the following process:
- Registrants who have a sibling registered in the French Immersion Program will be given preference until Thursday, January 31, 2019.
- Registrants who live within the geographical boundary of the school, and have been registered prior to January 31, 2019, will be placed next. Provided the number of residential boundary registrants exceeds the number of spaces available in the program (20 per class), and all students with older siblings currently enrolled in the French Immersion Program are placed, a lottery system will be used to determine acceptance into the program.
- If space is available, students from out of boundary will be placed in the program via lottery.
- Any registrations received after January 31, 2019, will be placed in available classes or on a waiting list in the order they registered, regardless of residency.
- Efforts will be made to accommodate as many waiting list students as possible.
A confirmation email will be sent in March 2019 to inform all families of children who registered for the program about the status of their enrollment. If you have any additional questions or require more information about the French Immersion Program or the registration process, please call 519-570-0003, extension 4277.
